What this solves

New Zealand's freedom camping rules are set by each council, not by central government. What is allowed in the Queenstown Lakes District can be a $400 fine in the same vehicle in Dunedin. There is no single national map. This tool pulls the current rules for the region you're heading to and tells you, in plain English, what is allowed and where to go for the closest dump station.

The key concept is "self-contained": a vehicle certified to NZS 5465 has a fixed toilet, fixed grey-water tank and a freshwater tank. Self-contained vehicles get access to a much wider set of freedom camping areas (FCAs).
