What this solves
The classic South Island loop is one of the great drives of the world, but the order matters. Doing it clockwise from Christchurch puts Mt Cook and the glaciers before Queenstown, which leaves the longest single drive (Haast Pass) for a day when you are well rested. Anti-clockwise does the same loop but you arrive at the glaciers earlier in the day when the ice is bluer and the ice-climbing windows open.
In summer, the West Coast gets busier mid-morning. In winter, the opposite is true. The optimizer picks the order that minimises wasted daylight and over-crowded photo spots for your month.
How to read the result
- The route is built as an ordered day-by-day sequence.
- Distance is the realistic road distance per leg (km), not the straight-line.
- "Longest day" is flagged — slow travellers may want to split it.
- If Milford Sound is included, a full day is allocated; weather risk is acknowledged.
Limitations
- This is a 10-stop planner, not a 30-stop guidebook. It assumes you want to see the marquee places, not every side road.
- Real time on the road is longer than the km suggests; see the rural road pacing tool for adjustments.
- Winter snow may close SH94 (Milford) and SH73 (Arthur's Pass) — check NZTA before committing.
FAQ
Q: How many days do I really need?
A: Minimum 7 days for the marquee stops at fast pace; 10–14 days is comfortable; 21+ days if you want to add Abel Tasman and the northern half.

Q: Should I add a rest day?
A: Yes. Most South Island itineraries under-pack rest. A day in Wanaka or Queenstown doing nothing is part of the experience.

Q: When is the best month?
A: Late Feb–early Apr or Oct–Nov. Crowds thin, weather is usually stable, and shoulder rates apply.
