What this solves
Google Maps and Apple Maps both underestimate NZ rural drive times. They assume sealed state highway speeds, no Friday rush leaving Auckland, no fatigue breaks, no gravel detours. Real-world, a 320 km drive in the South Island high country often takes 5–6 hours, not 4.
This tool layers the factors that actually slow you down: winding road geometry, Friday outbound traffic on SH1 north of Auckland, gravel patches on West Coast roads, fog on Desert Road, ice on Lindis Pass, and the half-hour you never planned for at the kauri grove carpark.
How to read the result
- Effective average speed combines road type, weather, and driver experience.
- Driving time is km ÷ effective speed, before rest stops.
- Stops add 20 min each for fuel, toilet and a photo. Add more for a 30-min lunch.
- Fatigue buffer is recommended and added automatically based on driver experience.
- The "leave by" suggestion gives a safe arrival window.
Limitations
- Single-leg calculation only; multi-stop trips need to be run leg by leg.
- Road closures (alpine passes in winter) are not modelled — check NZTA before booking accommodation.
- Friday rush is most extreme between 14:00 and 19:00 leaving Auckland or Wellington.
FAQ
Q: Why are NZ rural roads slower than they look on the map?
A: Single-lane bridges, tight corners, frost-heave patches, gravel sections, one-lane bridges, and stock crossings all reduce effective average speed.
